Independent Hip Hop

Man….. I had no idea that it had gotten to this level.

Over the last few weeks I been catching up on all of the “tube beef” videos from the ‘08.  I only sporadically stay in the loop with the music industry as a whole, much less all of the gossip and drama that is within the hip-hop/rap universe.  But I sheepishly admit that I THOROUGHLY enjoyed watching all of the shit that’s been going on.

It’s hard enough for me to even write up a blog.  I just don’t think that my personal opinion about music or people matters that much to where is must be broadcast to the world.  (I do it anyway, though, for other reasons…but I digress)  So I admire people that can post up not only blog posts, but “vlog” posts about what they’re doing and how they’re doing it.  And with regularity and fervor.  But these niggas have taken it to a degree that I never imagined would happen.  They are airing each other out – on video.  Pushing that shit into a computer, converting their fury into 1’s and 0’s, and letting us all see “why they really mad, sun!”  For me, it’s been one of those ‘this is what the internet was made for’ moments (right after porn and free music).

While all of the beef videos I’ve been watching is entertaining as hell (Bamm Tronics grabs the snacks and all that for the good ones), there is something oxymoronic about so-called street niggas pointing their finger in a camera and telling their rival how they’re gonna whoop their ass or steal their chain, all to be posted up on a video channel.  I mean, I just saw some dudes bustin’ guns in the air with their whole hood behind them.  Sayin where they stay at and callin’ people out by name…on YouTube??

Bah, whatever.  Who am I to judge?  While I agree with the sentiments that these acts, from shit talking to open-handed smacks in the mouth, are wreckless at best… I still enjoy the hell out of them for some reason.  I’d feel like a heel if one of these binary beefs led to someone losing their life.  But I can’t stop watching it.  What’s that they say about seeing a car accident?
